St. John’s University, also known as SJU or STJ, is a private, Roman Catholic, coeducational university located in Queens, which is the largest in area, the second largest in population, and the easternmost of the five boroughs of New York City, having a population estimated at a number of 2 million inhabitants, fact which also makes it the 10th most populated county in USA, as well as the nation’s fourth-most-densely populated county.
St. John’s University was founded in 1870, by the Vincentian Fathers, and it was originally located in the borough of Brooklyn, being relocated at the beginning of the 1950’s, in its current location, in the borough of Queens. In addition to the Queens campus, St. John’s also has campuses in Staten Island (Notre Dame College), Manhattan, Rome and Italy, also offering its students a graduate center in Oakdale, New York, in the spring of 2009, a campus in Paris, France being opened, as well.
According to U.S. News and World Report, St. John’s School of Law is in the 1st tier, on the 72nd place, the same publication also ranking its School of Education 58th, scoring 52 out of 100. St. John’s College, itself, has been ranked 504th, in the 2009 edition of Forbes Magazines America’s Best Colleges, The Princeton Review naming it one of the "Best Northeastern College", ranking it 17th for "diverse student population’" and 8th for "least accessible professors".
Its athletic teams are known as the St. John’s Red Storm, which compete on 17 NCAA Division I teams compete in the Big East Conference, except for fencing and lacrosse, in which they compete in the ECAC. The men’s basketball team is perhaps the most well-known team on campus, having the 7th-most NCAA tournament appearances (27), also having 2 Wooden National Player of the Year Award Winners, 11 consensus All-Americans, 6 members of the College Basketball Hall of Fame, sending not less than 59 players to the NBA. Although they had 27 NCAA tournament appearances, they currently hold the NCAA Division I record for most NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championship appearances, without a championship.
